Florida Department of Education Meeting

This past Wednesday, I had the opportunity to travel to Destin, Florida, to speak before the Florida Board of Education about the improvement plan for Rodney B. Cox Elementary. Our discussion highlighted the urgent need for decisive action to support the incredible students and families in East Pasco. As a community, we must rise together and intervene immediately to ensure this school meets its potential and delivers the academic excellence our students deserve.

As part of this important initiative, I’m proud to introduce Dr. Shana Rafalski, our new Assistant Superintendent of Opportunity Schools. Opportunity Schools refers to schools that have been identified as needing additional support to overcome specific challenges and deliver on their promise of a high-quality education.

Why the name? Because these schools represent an opportunity for us—as adults—to take responsibility and meet the unique needs and challenges these families and schools face daily. It’s about recognizing the potential to uplift these schools, strengthen their foundations, and create better opportunities for every student they serve.

Dr. Rafalski brings a wealth of experience and passion to this role and will work closely with our talented administrators and teachers at Opportunity Schools to elevate academic standards, support educators, and empower our students to achieve greatness.

We are deeply committed to strengthening our schools and making a lasting impact in our community. Together, with our dedicated educators, families, and partners, we will continue to build a brighter future for every student we serve.
