JOB GOAL

Responsible for planning, coordinating, performing, and monitoring functions and services related to the safety and security of the school and District environment; this includes providing, creating, and maintaining security projects, supporting administrative staff, ensuring consistency in day-to day operations, and providing coverage where necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Serve as support and assist in training for employees responsible for providing and ensuring the safety and security of the school environment.
  2. Understand and assist in maintaining Florida State Statutes, Department of Education (DOE) Rules, and Board policies and procedures related to school safety.
  3. Evaluate and train employees and make appropriate recommendations for policy changes for the school safety program.
  4. Plan, organize, coordinate, and assist with activities related to providing security at school and District functions, including after-school and extra-curricular activities and traffic initiatives.
  5. Complete administrative tasks and responsibilities including, but not limited to, reviewing and/or preparing incident reports, maintaining and tracking of school safety inventory, and assisting with identifying, drafting, maintaining, monitoring, and ensuring compliance of school safety grants.
  6. Assist with the maintenance of school safety programs including, but not limited to, Fortify Florida and CrisisGo.
  7. Provide security and surveillance to school campuses where coverage is needed.
  8. Investigate, monitor, and report suspicious activity including theft, vandalism, and criminal activity to administration and, when appropriate, to law enforcement.
  9. Communicate with school administrators, students, parents/guardians, staff, and community members regarding security-related concerns and issues; work cooperatively with law enforcement and District personnel.
  10. Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action in accordance with established guidelines; provide basic first aid services as needed.
  11. Maintain school and District video footage, provide video footage of incidents when requested for internal or law enforcement investigations, and maintain the integrity and security of footage by following the chain of custody procedures.
  12. Assist with distributing and managing body-worn cameras assigned to the school safety personnel.
  13. Suppress disturbances and security incidents according to established guidelines and procedures.
  14. De-escalate confrontations between students, parents/guardians, visitors, community members and others as applicable.
  15. Assist with and complete audits as instructed to ensure compliance with federal, state, and District requirements.
  16. Inform school administration and other appropriate staff members regarding investigative activities and follow proper practices/procedures necessary to secure the safe and peaceful conduct of District and school business/activities.
  17. Assist with the Florida Safe Schools Assessment Tool (FSSAT) security assessment reviews and provide input regarding security assessments at assigned schools.
  18. Assist with and monitor school safety drills.
  19. Serve as a District representative at emergency shelters as determined by the Superintendent and provide leadership to ensure a secure work environment during an emergency or crisis situation.
  20. Keep supervisors and any other applicable administration apprised of any incident or issues involving a school/department, staff member, or School Safety Guard.
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to pass a psychological evaluation as required by Chapter 2018-3, Laws of Florida
  • Ability to be physically and mentally prepared to respond in an emergency or potentially dangerous situation
  • Ability to safely use a firearm, taser, and other law enforcement-related equipment
  • Ability to obtain information through observation and interviews
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Willingness to use force when circumstances and established protocols dictate escalation; up to and including deadly force
  • All hires must meet physical requirements of Post Offer Employment Testing (POET) and drug screening
  • All hires must submit to and pass an initial drug test and subsequent random drug tests in accordance with the requirements of Florida Statute and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) from an accredited institution
  • Five years’ experience in law enforcement, security, the military, or related field
  • Five years’ experience with safe use of firearms, tasers, and other law enforcement-related equipment
  • Successful completion of initial and ongoing training provided by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office as required by Chapter 2018-3, Laws of Florida, as a condition of employment
  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position
  • Minimum of two years’ experience as a School Safety Guard

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License
  • Successful completion of training for concealed carry weapon permit as a condition of employment and ongoing certification and training
  • Obtain and maintain a School Guardian certificate from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office
  • Satisfactory completion of Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course, or agreement to earn within one year of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in the field of Criminal Justice, or related field
  • Eight years’ experience in the field of law enforcement, security, or the military
  • Eight years’ experience with safe use of firearms, tasers, and other law enforcement-related equipment
  • Two years’ experience successfully creating and managing project plans, projects, and audits
  • Awareness of and experience with the tenets of trauma-informed care and mental health resources

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

Cold: The worker is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures are below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Heat: The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures are above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Noise: The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.

Hazards: The worker is subject to hazards. This includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places and exposure to high heat or chemicals.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
