JOB GOAL

Responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all District automobiles, buses, trucks, and other related equipment and provide support to the Shop Manager for various duties and responsibilities, as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.

1.     Support the Shop Manager with the following responsibilities:

  • Maintain communication with site operations staff and district departments regarding maintenance activities.
  • Assign personnel to inspect, test, and road check equipment to determine the nature of defects and failures reported.
  • Provide daily supervision and delegate repair activities of all automotive equipment requiring scheduled or unscheduled maintenance.
  • Perform post-repair inspections of work performed to ensure highest quality of workmanship and repair.
  • Ensure that employees are compliant with the regulatory requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to maintain a safe working environment.

2.     Assist with training of subordinates in new maintenance techniques, diagnosis, safety standards, work completion, shop safety, shop cleanliness,                time management, and ensure that the appropriate standards are practiced.

3.     Assist with required Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) fuel storage tank monitoring and hazardous waste materials management                   monitoring and compliance.

4.     Perform general, including but not limited to, minor, and major repair work on automobiles, buses, trucks, heavy equipment and other related                   automotive, diesel, and mechanical equipment.

5.     Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units or parts in cooling, fuel, exhaust, or other systems; tune motors using standard testing equipment.

6.     Repair and overhaul brakes, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, repair and install hydraulic and electronic controls, and                    perform minor electrical repair.

7.     Apply a broad knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the auto mechanic trade and of occupational hazards and safety              precautions; of operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of equipment; and the principles of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal                        combustion engines.

8.     Maintain work areas and be cognizant of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safe storing and disposing of waste materials according to            the regulatory requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

9.     Administer safety inspections using required forms and maintain accurate records as required by the Florida Department of Education, School                   Transportation Management Department and generate reports as requested.

10.   Learn and uphold skills necessary to safely operate tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop repair equipment.

11.   Maintain assigned service vehicles in a clean, organized manner and maintain the required level of stock for that vehicle.

12.   Maintain personal work area in a clean, orderly fashion and assist in shop/work area cleaning.

13.   Immediately report any known unsafe or hazardous mechanical condition that exists on any vehicle or equipment to the Shop Manager                             Transportation, Supervisor of Transportation or Director of Transportation.

14.   Perform road test on vehicles to verify complaints or repairs.

15.   Assist in fueling and cleaning of buses or support vehicles as requested.

16.   Maintain all types of tools and equipment in good working order and condition with routine maintenance.

17.   Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to read and interpret shop and technical manuals related to assignments
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and repair District fleet vehicles and school buses
  • Able to provide own hand tools
  • Ability to understand and apply basic math skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders
  • May be required to meet physical requirements of Post Offer Employment Test (POET)
  • May be required to pass pre-employment drug screening according to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act (OTETA)

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or Vocational Degree in the field of Automotive from an accredited institution
  • One year experience in automotive, school bus maintenance, or other type of fleet maintenance
  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Current and valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, with a Passenger Endorsement 'P' or able to attain within 6 months of employment
  • Must maintain a driving record that meets the standards of the District Safe Driver Plan. Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of continued employment
  • Current and valid Florida Department of Education School Bus Safety Inspector Certification or able to attain within 2 years of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current and valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A, with a Passenger Endorsement 'P' or able to attain within 6 months of employment
  • Five years’ experience in automotive, school bus maintenance or other type of fleet maintenance.
  • Associate degree in the field of Automotive Technology from an accredited institution
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified, specifically Series A: Automobile and Light Truck Certification and Series S: School Bus Certification

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Direct supervision of assigned personnel. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; training employees; evaluating performance; and interviewing, testing, hiring, and assignment of personnel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

Cold: The worker is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures are below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Heat: The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures are above 90 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Noise: The worker is subject to noise. There is enough noise to cause the worker to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level.

Vibration: The worker is subject to vibration. There is exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

Hazards: The worker is subject to hazards. This includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places and exposure to high heat or chemicals.

Atmospheric Conditions: The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions affect the respiratory systems or the skin: fumes, odors, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT

  • Automotive diagnostic equipment to include meters, scanners, scopes; HVAC recycling equipment; hoists, jacks, lifts, and other related lifting equipment; tire equipment to include balancers, mount/dismount equipment; presses, pullers, hand tools, powered tools; other tooling and equipment commonly related to automotive repair; general office equipment, including personal computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones, etc.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
