JOB GOAL

Responsible for providing instruction to teen parent students on health and parenting topics, facilitating positive student responses to normal development, promoting health and safety, intervening to support current and potential health problems of teen parent students and their children, providing case management services, and actively collaborating with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Instruct classes related to prenatal and postnatal health care, parenting skills, and other topics as determined by state legislation.
  2. Prepare and implement varied educational materials, lesson plans, media, and technology and design the program based on assessed needs of students.
  3. Assign, grade, and evaluate student work and provide appropriate feedback.
  4. Serve as a health and safety education resource for teachers, providing classroom instruction of health-related topics upon request.
  5. Coach and model parenting best practices to teen parents and nursery staff.
  6. Provide professional, accessible medical treatment to teen parent students and their children for all current and potential health concerns and coordinate follow-up and case management as required.
  7. Coordinate health screenings for teen parents mandated by Florida law and for individual students based on need; conduct follow-up regarding potential health services; provide referral to appropriate agencies as needed.
  8. Manage and coordinate the supervision of Nursery Operations and the well-being of infants.
  9. Provide identification, assessment, intervention, evaluation, and health counseling to students with psychological concerns, physical limitations, and/or other medical concerns that may impact learning and assist in planning adaptation to limitations.
  10. Coordinate and assist with delegated health care activities through training and oversight of nursery functions and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) services to ensure safe and effective performance of delegated tasks including, but not limited to, medication administration, first aid, and other health procedures and responsibilities.
  11. Develop individualized health care plans for teen parent students based on identified student health needs within the school setting, collaborating with students, school personnel, parents/guardians, and community professionals to promote the highest degree of independent functioning possible.
  12. Complete local travel or home visits when medical or health circumstances merit their intervention; administrator approval will be required before travel.
  13. Maximize the quantity of in-class time by reducing the incidence of health-related absenteeism for both teen parents and their babies.
  14. Record services rendered; interpret and explain reports, activities, health care plans, accommodations and medical interventions as needed while maintaining confidentiality of information.
  15. Monitor compliance with current state immunization and health assessment requirements, assist with prevention and control of communicable diseases, and maintain student health information confidentially while ensuring accurate reporting of evidenced-based data to support school health services.
  16. Promote health and safety by serving as liaison and facilitator for access to health care resources in the community for teen parent students, parents/guardians, and staff.
  17. Collaborate with school staff to meet the health care needs of teen parent students by participating in the school-based intervention and 504 teams, responding to the intervention process, assisting with Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and revision, and assisting with homebound services.
  18. Adhere to District guidelines, federal, state, and local policies, and legal and ethical standards as they pertain to the scope of school nursing practice.
  19. Participate in development and implementation of health promotion activities and education for teen parent students, parents/guardians and staff.
  20. Develop and implement in-service training for school personnel on health issues and emergency preparedness.
  21. Attend training sessions, conferences, and workshops to keep up to date on best practices in the field.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to follow the steps of the Nursing Process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to promote and protect the optimal health status of students
  • Knowledge and understanding of all federal, state, and local laws pertaining to school health
  • Knowledge of pregnancy, child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current trends in school health, wellness education, and disease prevention
  • Ability to effectively engage in the problem-solving process
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum of two years’ clinical experience

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Permanent Florida Teaching Certificate and subject specific certification in K-12 Health. This can be accomplished by completing the Professional Development Certification Program (PDCP) offered by the District or by completing college courses specific to this program. Candidates who do not have the required Florida Department of Education certification will be required to agree to and sign a Condition to Earn statement requiring a permanent Florida Teaching Certificate and subject specific certification in K-12 Health to be obtained within the first year of employment.
  • Valid and current Registered Nurse licensed by Florida Department of Health, Division of Quality Medical Assurance
  • Valid and current certification of American Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Nursing, or related field
  • Two years’ experience in school nursing or pediatric clinic setting
  • Valid and current credential as a Nationally Certified School Nurse (NCSN)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

  • Medical equipment including, but not limited to, vision machines, audiometers, stadiometers, scales, etc.
  • Proper use and handling of crutches, wheelchairs, standers, etc.

Failure to complete this requirement will result in non-reappointment of the employee the following school year.

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
