JOB GOAL

Responsible for the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive counseling program with emphasis on academics, prevention, and early intervention to maximize students’ academic success in accordance with District policies and state laws; and for planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services for off-track students to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Assist with planning and developing District and school prevention and intervention programs that align with District philosophy, goals, objectives, and grants.
  2. Coordinate prevention and intervention activities with appropriate school-based and District staff and assist school-based administrators and Office for Student Support Programs and Services (SSPS) staff with student placement using data-based, problem-solving skills.
  3. Provide differentiated academic counseling support and assist students with setting short and long-term goals to meet deadlines for completing graduation requirements.
  4. Orient students to instructional programs including, but not limited to, online credit recovery programs and virtual courses.
  5. Provide instructional support, coaching, guidance, and interventions to assist students in the completion of virtual and classroom curriculum.
  6. Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to interact while respecting the value of individual contributions and points of view.
  7. Monitor and evaluate student academic performance and use data to develop ongoing plans for intervention; communicate information with parents/guardians as needed.
  8. Ensure that each assigned student has accurate, up-to-date records in the course and student information system (MIS) and maintain effective and efficient recordkeeping procedures.
  9. Complete appropriate reports for local, state, federal and educational agencies.
  10. Provide direct consultation and communication to students and parents/guardians on matters relating to courses, procedures, and learning strategies.
  11. Use appropriate District and state assessments to ensure and maximize students’ graduation completion.
  12. Assist in the administration of required assessments, as assigned by the site and program administrator.
  13. Assist students and parents with technical support requests relating to virtual courses and community support programs.
  14. Manage a flexible work schedule that includes duties at the worksite, in the community, and at students’ home(s) for applicable home visits.
  15. Confer with all stakeholders for the purpose of assisting off-track students in achieving their educational, career, and personal/social goals.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of personal-social, academic, and career theories and practices
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to student education
  • Knowledge and understanding of tiers of support and the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Ability to effectively engage in the problem-solving process

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Guidance and Counseling, School Counseling, or related field
  • Two years’ experience in developing and implementing K-12 prevention-intervention programs
  • Two years’ experience teaching and/or guiding students who have been identified as at-risk
  • Professional development experience in the areas of research-based exemplary practices for at-risk students and assessment, communication skills, monitoring for student achievement, and student and parent/guardian conferencing skills
  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid and/or eligible for a Florida Educator’s Professional Certificate in a coverage at the appropriate level
  • Valid Florida Educator’s Certificate in Guidance and Counseling or School Counseling PK-12

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four years’ experience in developing and implementing K-12 prevention-intervention programs
  • Four years’ experience teaching and/or guiding students who have been identified as at-risk
  • Experience in effectively using the early warning system to assist students in meeting graduation requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. If the use of arm and / or leg controls require exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated as Light Work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, talk, and hear; stand and walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
