JOB GOAL

Responsible for providing leadership, strategic planning, and implementation of the systems, structures, and daily operation of school library programs. Develops processes and procedures that support frequent and meaningful use of the library media centers and materials in each school for students, staff, and families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Collaborate with district staff, school-based administrators, teachers, coaches, and Resource Management Associates in developing instruction and programs for the library media program.
  2. Provide relevant professional development and training opportunities for school administration, instructional coaches, Resource Management Associates, and appropriate district and school-based staff.
  3. Assist school leaders and School Advisory Councils in the selecting and acquiring library media materials.
  4. Plan the basic collection of media material for schools while budgeting for, selecting, and purchasing media materials, equipment, furniture, and supplies for new schools.
  5. Prepare and maintain most current technical specifications for library furnishings, equipment, shelving, and supplies appropriate or secondary library media centers.
  6. Assist library media staff with handling challenges regarding library materials.
  7. Serve as consultant to Planning and Construction Services for new or remodeled media facilities.
  8. Provide support for schools which have no assigned Resource Management Associate and serve as library media consultant to the principals and staff.
  9. Maintain a program of good public relations through cooperation with other libraries and library related programs in the community, participating in local, state, and national professional organizations, and interpreting the school library media program to the public.
  10.  Implement and manage library media programs and events within the district.
  11.  Assist with planning and supporting annual media inventory for all schools.
  12. Develop policies to guide collection maintenance including weeding outdated resources.
  13. Provide standards and best practices for evaluating collections.
  14. Ensure that eBook collections are maintained and accessible to students and staff.
  15. Provide analysis of circulation statistics to individual schools. 
  16. Collaborate with the Purchasing Department and vendors to ensure that the products and records for book purchases meet district standards and state requirements.
  17. Serve as a resource for district and school-based personnel to support the curriculum and student achievement.
  18. Represent Library Media Services at appropriate district and school-based meetings and/or community meetings/forums
  19. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of proper methods shelving books, cataloging materials, accession of books, and purchasing library materials
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, manage, and carry out duties efficiently and within established timeframes
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Library Science, Education, or related field 
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in a school library media center or public library 
  • Two years of related project management or leadership experience
  • OR 
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

Valid and current Educational Media Specialist certification

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Library Science, Education, or related field
  • Working knowledge and/or experience with inventory software and circulation platforms

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT

Book binding machines, and general office equipment, including personal computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones, etc.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
