JOB GOAL

Responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all District automobiles, buses, trucks, and other related equipment and for providing support to the Shop Manager for various duties and responsibilities, as needed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Support the Shop Manager with the following responsibilities as assigned:
  • Maintain communication with site operations staff and District departments regarding maintenance activities.
  • Assign personnel to inspect, test, and road check equipment to determine the nature of defects and failures reported.
  • Provide daily supervision and delegate repair activities of all automotive equipment requiring scheduled or unscheduled maintenance.
  • Perform post-repair inspections of work performed to ensure highest quality of workmanship and repair.
  • Ensure that employees are compliant with the regulatory requirements of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to maintain a safe working environment.
  1. Assist with training of staff in new maintenance techniques, diagnosis, safety standards, work completion, shop safety, shop cleanliness, time management, and ensure that the appropriate standards are practiced.
  2. Assist with required Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) fuel storage tank monitoring and hazardous waste materials management monitoring and compliance.
  3. Perform general, including but not limited to, minor, and major repair work on automobiles, buses, trucks, heavy equipment and other related automotive, diesel, and mechanical equipment.
  4. Inspect, adjust, and replace necessary units or parts in cooling, fuel, exhaust, or other systems; tune motors using standard testing equipment.
  5. Repair and overhaul brakes, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, repair and install hydraulic and electronic controls, and perform minor electrical repair.
  6. Diagnose, remove, and assemble components from assigned vehicles and equipment; clean, inspect, and assemble parts; reinstall components as needed.
  7. Diagnose potential vehicle malfunctions using necessary equipment for the purpose of determining needed repairs or replacement.
  8. Apply a broad knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the auto mechanic trade and of occupational hazards and safety precautions; of operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of equipment; and the principles of gasoline and diesel-fueled internal combustion engines.
  9. Administer safety inspections using required forms and maintain accurate records as required by the Florida Department of Education, School Transportation Management Department and generate reports as requested.
  10. Learn and uphold skills necessary to safely operate tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop repair equipment.
  11. Maintain assigned service vehicles and personal work area in a clean, organized manner and maintain the required level of stock for assigned vehicle(s); assist with shop/work area cleaning as required.
  12. Immediately report any known unsafe or hazardous mechanical condition that exists on any vehicle or equipment to the Shop Manager Transportation, Supervisor of Transportation or Director of Transportation.
  13. Perform road test on vehicles to verify complaints or repairs.
  14. Assist in fueling and cleaning of buses or support vehicles as requested.
  15. Maintain repair records and use required software to ensure work orders are completed in a timely manner.
  16. Respond to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns, including emergency breakdowns and service.
  17. Maintain full complement of personal hand tools to be able to perform all duties.
  18. Maintain all types of tools and equipment in good working order and condition with routine maintenance.
  19. Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement and take appropriate action.
  20. Attend training workshops required by the District to keep abreast of current technology and trends, new developments in the industry, and government regulations.
  21. Serve as a District representative in transportation as determined by the Superintendent and provide leadership to ensure a secure work environment during an emergency or crisis situation.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to read and interpret shop and technical manuals related to assignments
  • Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair District fleet vehicles and school buses
  • Able to provide own hand tools
  • Ability to understand and apply basic math skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms
  • Knowledge of technology/devices used on our vehicles, such as surveillance (camera) systems, GPS, student tablets, 2-way radios
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders
  • All hires must meet physical requirements of Post Offer Employment Testing (POET)
  • All hires must pass pre-employment drug screening according to the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employees Testing Act (OTETA)
  • Must submit to and pass an initial drug test and subsequent random drug tests if required in accordance with the requirements of Florida Statute Section 112.0455 and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma, General Education Degree (GED), or Vocational Degree from an accredited institution in the field of Automotive Technology, or related field
  • Three years’ experience in automotive, school bus maintenance, or other type of fleet maintenance
  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Must maintain current and valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B, with a Passenger Endorsement 'P' or able to attain within 6 months of employment
  • Must maintain a driving record that meets the standards of the District Safe Driver Plan. Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of continued employment
  • Must maintain current and valid Florida Department of Education School Bus Safety Inspector Certification or able to attain within 1 year of employment
  • Must maintain ASE A/C Certification or able to attain within 6 months of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current and valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A, with a Passenger Endorsement 'P' or able to attain within 6 months of employment
  • Five years’ experience in automotive, school bus maintenance or other type of fleet maintenance
  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in the field of Automotive Technology, or related field
  • ASE Certified, specifically Series A: Automobile and Light Truck Certification and Series S: School Bus Certification
  • Alternative fuel ASE
  • Master Repair Certification, FAPT - OR -  Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) School bus tech certification (SBTC). ASE 1-6 must be acquired before SBTC can be obtained.
  • Vehicle Tech Certification, Florida Association for Pupil Transportation (FAPT)
  • Hazmat & Tanker endorsements on CDL license

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Supervise the daily tasks of assigned employees, to include planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; training employees. Review the work of vehicle technicians and provide feedback. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

Cold: The worker is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures are below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Heat: The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures are above 90 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Noise: The worker is subject to noise. There is enough noise to cause the worker to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level.

Vibration: The worker is subject to vibration. There is exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

Hazards: The worker is subject to hazards. This includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places and exposure to high heat or chemicals.

Atmospheric Conditions: The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions affect the respiratory systems or the skin: fumes, odors, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

Oils: The worker is subject to oils. There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT

  • Automotive diagnostic equipment to include meters, scanners, scopes; HVAC recycling equipment; hoists, jacks, lifts, and other related lifting equipment; tire equipment to include balancers, mount/dismount equipment; presses, pullers, hand tools, powered tools; other tooling and equipment commonly related to automotive repair; general office equipment, including personal computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones, etc.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
