JOB GOAL

Responsible for facilitating positive student responses to normal development, promoting health and safety, intervening to support current and potential health problems, providing case management services, and actively collaborating with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Provide professional, accessible medical treatment to students for all current and potential health concerns and coordinate follow-up and case management as required.
  2. Coordinate and assist with delegated health care activities through training and oversight of clinic functions and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) services to ensure safe and effective performance of delegated tasks including, but not limited to, medication administration, first aid, and other health procedures and responsibilities.
  3. Coordinate school-wide health screenings at grade levels mandated by Florida law and for individual students based on need; conduct follow-up regarding potential health services; provide referral to appropriate agencies as needed.
  4. Provide identification, assessment, intervention, evaluation, and health counseling to students with psychological concerns, physical limitations, and/or other medical concerns that may impact learning and assist in planning adaptation to limitations.
  5. Develop individualized health care plans for students based on identified student health needs within the school setting, collaborating with students, school personnel, parents/guardians, and community professionals to promote the highest degree of independent functioning possible.
  6. Maximize the quantity of in-class time by reducing the incidence of health-related absenteeism.
  7. Record services rendered; interpret and explain reports, activities, health care plans, accommodations and medical interventions as needed while maintaining confidentiality of information.
  8. Monitor compliance with current state immunization and health assessment requirements, assist with prevention and control of communicable diseases, and maintain student health information confidentially while ensuring accurate reporting of evidenced-based data to support school health services.
  9. Promote health and safety by serving as liaison and facilitator for access to health care resources in the community for students, parents/guardians, and staff.
  10. Collaborate with school staff to meet the health care needs of students by participating in the school-based intervention and 504 teams, responding to the intervention process, assisting with Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and revision, and assisting with homebound services.
  11. Adhere to District guidelines, federal, state, and local policies, and legal and ethical standards as they pertain to the scope of school nursing practice.
  12. Serve as a health and safety education resource for teachers, providing classroom instruction of health-related topics upon request.
  13. Participate in development and implementation of health promotion activities and education for students, parents/guardians and staff.
  14. Develop and implement in-service training for school personnel on health issues and emergency preparedness.
  15. Attend training sessions, conferences, and workshops to keep up to date on best practices in the field.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to follow the steps of the Nursing Process (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation) to promote and protect the optimal health status of students
  • Knowledge and understanding of all federal, state, and local laws pertaining to school health
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, community and family dynamics, current trends in school health, wellness education, and disease prevention
  • Ability to effectively engage in the problem-solving process
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in the field of Nursing (ADN) with a minimum of two years’ clinical experience
  • OR
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Nursing (BSN) with a minimum of two years’ clinical experience

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid and current Registered Nurse licensed by Florida Department of Health, Division of Quality Medical Assurance
  • Valid and current certification of American Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Nursing (BSN)
  • Two years’ experience in pediatric clinical setting or school nursing
  • Valid and current credential as a Nationally Certified School Nurse (NCSN)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT

  • Medical equipment including, but not limited to, vision machines, audiometers, stadiometers, scales, etc.
  • Proper use and handling of crutches, wheelchairs, standers, etc.
  • General office equipment, including personal computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones, etc.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.
