JOB GOAL

Responsible for monitoring and supervising student bus riders, including working with exceptional students. This includes providing a safe environment for students who are transported by school bus in accordance with the policies and procedures of the District School Board of Pasco County. This position acts as a substitute bus assistant when necessary for coverage due to route vacancies or employee absences. Must be flexible, able to adjust hours according to immediate needs, and willing to assist on any route.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Monitor, supervise, and assist students at all times while on the bus, boarding and leaving the bus, at bus stops, and on campus; promptly meet the bus at designated stops.
  2. Instruct students on proper safety methods to board and depart from the bus and ensure that instructions are carefully followed.
  3. Maintain a safe bus ride and order on the bus; stop any disruptive behavior by following District policies, procedures, and protocols.
  4. Assist in performing student checks at each school in the morning and at the end of each bus run in the afternoon.
  5. Follow instructions from the bus driver and other staff including, but not limited to, transportation administration, teachers, and school administration regarding supervision and handling of students.
  6. Respond to emergency situations as they arise and keep management informed of potential problems and unusual events.
  7. Report undisciplined, bullying, or harassing students to the proper authorities immediately.
  8. Aid with supervision, escorting, and movement of students in specific school settings or specialized functions during the school day, before and after school, during emergency drills, assemblies, and between class times.
  9. Maintain confidentiality of any information which may include but not limited to, student behavior, health, special needs, program, changes, and staff members according to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
  10. Complete various forms and records, including but not limited to, update route sheets, time sheets, field trip forms, incident reports, and accident reports.
  11. Intervene with District-Approved Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, medication, and child-specific procedures when indicated and appropriately trained.
  12. Demonstrate dependability, integrity, and respect for individual differences.
  13. Maintain required certifications by participating in workshops and in-service training sessions, safety sessions, and employee meetings as required.
  14. Follow District policies and procedures concerning education, health, safety, personal information, and the wellbeing of students.
  15. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) from an accredited institution
  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • None

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree from an accredited institution in the field of Transportation Logistics, or related field
  • Two years’ experience working with students
  • Satisfactory completion of American Red Cross First Aid course, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) course

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors:The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

Cold: The worker is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures are below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Heat: The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures are above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Noise: The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout to be heard above the ambient noise level.

Vibration: The worker is subject to vibration. There is exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT

  • Transportation equipment including wheelchairs, car seats, school bus lifts, and other adaptive equipment and devices as necessary.
  • General office equipment, including personal computers, fax machines, copiers, telephones, etc.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
