JOB GOAL

Responsible for planning, coordinating, performing, and monitoring functions and services related to ensuring the safety and security of the school environment. This includes providing supervision of staff, ensuring consistency in day-to-day operations, and providing coverage where necessary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.
  1. Supervise, evaluate, train, and assist with administrative responsibilities and delegate work to appropriate staff; make recommendations for policy changes and employment.
  2. Serve as team lead and assist in training for employees responsible for providing and ensuring the safety and security of the school environment and of emergency operations.
  3. Plan, organize, coordinate, and assist with activities related to providing security at school and District functions, including after-school and extra-curricular activities and traffic initiatives, and inform senior management of potential issues.
  4. Provide security and surveillance to school campuses and District locations where coverage is needed.
  5. Investigate, monitor, and report suspicious activity including theft, vandalism, and criminal mischief to administration and, when appropriate, to law enforcement.
  6. Respond to emergency situations and take appropriate action in accordance with established guidelines; provide basic first aid services as needed.
  7. Make recommendations and inform school administration and other appropriate staff members regarding investigative activities and follow proper practices/procedures necessary to secure the safe and peaceful conduct of District and school business/activities.
  8. Communicate with school administrators, students, parents/guardians, staff, and community members regarding security related concerns and issues; work cooperatively with law enforcement and District personnel.
  9. Observe and manage students in halls, at lunch, and during other non-classroom activities.
  10. Assist in developing best practices for performing searches of students and school property.
  11. Suppress disturbances and security incidents according to established guidelines and procedures.
  12. Deescalate confrontations between students, parents/guardians, visitors, community members, and others.
  13. Assist school administration and law enforcement with threat assessments.
  14. Review and provide input to security assessments at assigned schools and locations.
  15. Review and/or prepare incident reports and assist with audits, grants, and inventory as required; maintain appropriate documentation as required.
  16. Assist with school safety drills under the direction of administration.
  17. Assist in maintaining District safety platforms and programs.
  18. Maintain school and District video footage and maintain the integrity by following the chain of custody procedures; provide video footage of incidents when requested for internal or police investigations.
  19. Support schools with the implementation of behavioral health services.
  20. Understand and assist in maintaining Florida State Statute, Department of Education (DOE) Rule, Board Policy, and procedures in relation to School Safety.
  21. Serve as a District representative at emergency shelters as determined by the Superintendent and provide leadership to ensure a secure work environment during an emergency or crisis.
  22. Ensure the Chief of Safety and Emergency Operations and the Captain of School Safety are apprised of any incident or issues involving a school, staff member, or school safety guard.
  23. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to pass a psychological evaluation as required by Chapter 2018-3, Laws of Florida
  • Ability to be physically and mentally prepared to respond in an emergency or potentially dangerous situation
  • Ability to safely use a firearm, taser, and other law enforcement related equipment
  • Ability to obtain information through observation and interviews
  • Operating knowledge of computer programs, including email, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and web-based technologies and platforms
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, orally and in writing, including electronic media
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to organize, prioritize, and manage work assignments in an efficient manner and within established timeframes
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all stakeholders
  • Willingness to use force when circumstances and established protocols dictate escalation; up to and including deadly force
  • All hires must meet physical requirements of Post Offer Employment Testing (POET) and drug screening
  • All hires must submit to and pass an initial drug test and subsequent random drug tests in accordance with the requirements of Florida Statute Section 112.0455 and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office
 

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) from an accredited institution
  • Three years of military experience or experience in law enforcement, security, or a related field
  • Experience with safe use of firearms and tasers
  • OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid and current Florida Driver’s License
  • Successful completion of training for concealed carry weapon permit and/or HR218 as a condition of employment and ongoing certification and training
  • Obtain and maintain a School Guardian certificate from a Florida Sheriff’s Office
  • Satisfactory completion of First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course or agreement to earn within one year of employment
  • Successful completion of ongoing training and yearly recertification provided by the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office as required by Chapter 2018-3, Laws of Florida, as a condition of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Five years of work in the field of law enforcement, security, or military
  • Coursework or training in criminal justice, or related field
  • Awareness of the tenets of trauma informed care and mental health resources
  • Ability to create project plans and manage projects

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Direct supervision of assigned personnel. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints and resolving problems; training employees; evaluating performance; and interviewing, testing, hiring, and assignment of personnel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds. Specific vision ability required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Indoors and Outdoors: The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.

Cold: The worker is subject to extreme cold. Temperatures are below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Heat: The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures are above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

Noise: The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.

Hazards: The worker is subject to hazards. This includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places and exposure to high heat or chemicals.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
