JOB GOAL

This employee is responsible for organizing and implementing a therapy program to meet the needs of speech, language and hearing impaired students and meeting the duties of teaching as outlined in laws and policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.

Planning:

  1. Designing the exceptional student education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy of the district.
  2. Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, visiting related facilities, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas among the district staff.
  3. Working in coordination with other ESE teachers in planning and developing the program.

Programming:

  1. Preparing educational plans annually for each student based on individually assessed needs in accordance with district procedures.
  2. Conducting grade-wide hearing screenings once a year in grades stipulated in the Pasco County District Procedures for Exceptional Student Education.
  3. Preparing therapy plans for each student.
  4. Providing appropriate schedules for exceptional students involving school personnel as required.
  5. Conducting speech and language screening once a year for all kindergarten students and all students not previously enrolled in school.
  6. Seeking a variety of services through community resources and agencies to meet the needs of exceptional students.
  7. Participating in the in-school staffing and screening processes as appropriate.
  8. Participating on evaluation teams for speech, language, and hearing impaired students as appropriate.
  9. Screening all ESE candidates for hearing loss.
  10. Providing speech and/or hearing screening tests for all students referred by the in-school staffing committee.
  11. Providing diagnostic/evaluation testing for students failing speech screening.

Public Relations:

  1. Cooperating with school personnel in coordinating ESE services within that school.
  2. Developing and conducting an inservice program to inform classroom teacher of the goals and objectives of the ESE program and ways of achieving them in the school setting.
  3. Conferring with the classroom teacher as requested concerning any educational needs of the student.
  4. Making available to teachers instructional ideas that are appropriate for exceptional students within the classroom situation.
  5. Providing information to community groups and parents concerning ESE programs as requested or needed.
  6. Coordinating and providing news releases through the immediate supervisor for local news media as needed.

Reporting:

  1. Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in his/her permanent folder.
  2. Furnishing the principal with current exceptional student schedules.
  3. Completing progress reports on each student in the program.
  4. Supplying progress reports to school personnel and to parents of exceptional students as necessary and requested.
  5. Completing appropriate reports for local, state, federal and educational agencies.
  6. Referring those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Florida certification in field or hold appropriate state license for the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certificate of clinical competence (ASHA).
  • Experience in public schools.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
