JOB GOAL

This employee is responsible for organizing and implementing an instructional program for adaptive physical education and meeting the duties of teaching as outlined in laws and policies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.

Planning:

  1. Designing the adaptive physical education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy and goals of the district.
  2. Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, visiting related facilities, reading professional literature and exchanging ideas with district staff.
  3. Working in coordination with other ESE teachers and ancillary personnel in planning and developing the program.

Programming:

  1. Identifying strengths and weaknesses of ESE students served in the program.
  2. Preparing, implementing and evaluating an annual educational plan for each student based on individually assessed needs and in accordance with district procedures.
  3. Using appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to areas of instruction.
  4. Planning, implementing and evaluating projects and programs designed to serve students in the program as assigned (i.e., Special Olympics, PI Games, VE Games, etc.)
  5. Planning and providing regularly scheduled Special Olympics, PI Games and VE Games training programs as assigned.
  6. Preparing lesson plans for each student.
  7. Providing appropriate schedules for exceptional students involving school personnel as required.
  8. Seeking a variety of services through community resources and agencies to meet the needs of students.
  9. Providing specialized instructional techniques through individual or group sessions designed to meet the educational needs of students.
  10. Participating in the in-school staffing and screening process as appropriate.
  11. Participating on evaluation teams for students as appropriate.
  12. Implementing self-care programs, including providing direct assistance to students (e.g., toileting, positioning, lifting, etc.)
  13. Planning and implementing a program to assemble, adjust and maintain equipment used in the program.
  14. Supervising paraprofessionals as assigned.

Public Relations:

  1. Cooperating with school personnel in coordinating ESE services within that school.
  2. Developing and conducting an inservice program to inform classroom teachers of the goals and objectives of adaptive PE and ways of achieving them in the school setting.
  3. Assisting in providing information to community groups and parents concerning adaptive PE programs as requested (includes special projects and programs such as Special Olympics, PI Games, VE Games, etc.)
  4. Assisting in coordinating and providing news releases through the immediate supervisor for local news media as requested.
  5. Conferring with other classroom teachers and ancillary personnel concerning any educational needs of the students served in the program.

Reporting:

  1. Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in his/her permanent folder.
  2. Furnishing the school principal with current exceptional student schedules.
  3. Completing progress reports on each student in the program.
  4. Supplying progress reports to school personnel and to parents as necessary and requested.
  5. Completing reports for appropriate local, state, federal and educational agencies.
  6. Referring those students who require further evaluation or re-evaluation follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.
  7. Other responsibilities as directed by his/her immediate supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree or above.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Florida certification in field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate work beyond the bachelor's degree.
  • Classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience in a like position.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be established by the District.

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
