Sunlake High School
Science fair has been constant, shaping the researcher I am today. Over the last four years I investigated Ibuprofen overdoses: how they work and how to reverse them. This year, I will explore using bacterial transplants to reverse metabolic acidosis. I am hoping to receive my fourth Society for Science and Engineering Fair nomination to share my research with professionals. Using creativity and skill, I received merit awards both times I attended state finals.
In band and color guard, I serve as flute section leader, ensuring my section is successful within the ensemble. In guard, I am part of the a-line, an elite group that is pulled for the most difficult choreography, and who is expected to lead in the program. Another important leadership role I hold is youth group board member with my synagogue's youth group board. I have worked to grow membership and plan events.
Judaism is important to my identity. A most emphasized Jewish value in my community is tikkun olam, or repairing the world. In middle and high school, I returned to my Hebrew school to volunteer as a teacher’s aid. My bar mitzvah preparation also included a community service project. My best friend and I spent time interviewing residents at the local Jewish retirement home. We created a video of residents sharing advice to younger viewers.
I am consistent about leaving a space better than I found it, both the physical and the energy of the space. Before I leave a room or area, I am sure to pick up trash, and restore order to objects that may have been disturbed. I also work to share positive energy, in the hopes others will pay it forward. Turning the mood around is a skill I work hard on, and use often.
