Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a global nonprofit organization that operates with one guiding principle: Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge. AVID’s education system brings research-based curriculum and strategies to students that develop critical thinking, literacy, and math skills across all content areas.
The AVID Elective is the core of AVID Secondary. It targets students with the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. The AVID student is determined to work hard to acquire the skills necessary to be successful in rigorous coursework in high school and college. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and may come from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but may be falling short of their potential. AVID places these students on the college track, requiring them to enroll in the most rigorous courses that are appropriate for them, such as Honors, Advanced Placement, IB, Dual Enrollment, or AICE. To support them in the rigorous coursework, AVID students learn organizational and study skills, develop critical thinking, learn to ask probing questions, receive academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities to make their college dreams reality.
AVID schoolwide is when a strong AVID system transforms the instruction, systems, leadership, and culture of a school, ensuring college readiness for all AVID Elective students and improved academic performance for all students based on increased opportunities.
Students who live within the attendance boundaries of Pasco’s AVID schools have the opportunity to be exposed to AVID strategies in their classrooms. Middle and high school students who are interested in the AVID elective at their zoned school should contact the school’s administration for information on enrollment.
