Creating a School or Classroom Facebook Page

Overview

Facebook offers several different types of accounts and communities. For school district use, all schools and classrooms using Facebook must use a Facebook Page.

Do not create:

  • An individual (personal) Facebook account for a school or classroom
  • A Facebook Group as your school’s primary social media presence

A Facebook Page is the appropriate choice because it is designed for organizations, businesses, schools, and public entities. To learn more about why you should use a Facebook Page, please see the FAQ below.

Before You Begin

Official school Facebook Pages (including Teacher Pages) should always have at least two employees with administrator access, chosen by the school's administration team. This ensures that the Page remains under the school’s control if an employee changes positions, retires, or leaves the district. It also allows another administrator to update the Page, or manage the Page if the primary administrator is unavailable.

You’ll need:

  • Your own personal Facebook account (can be created with home or work email address, or you can use your existing Facebook account)
  • A school district email address
  • The name of your school or classroom
  • Profile picture and cover photo (not technically required, but nice to have)

Your personal Facebook account will not become public simply because you create a Page.

People who visit the Page do not see your personal profile unless you choose to make it public yourself.

Creating a Facebook Page

  1. Log into your Facebook account.
  2. Select FaceBook Menu (the 3x3 grid icon), then Pages.
  3. Click on +Create Page.
  4. Select Public Page, then click Next.
  5. Click Get started.
  6. Enter the Page name.
  7. Select the appropriate category (such as School or Education).
  8. Click Create Page.
  9. Facebook will present you with with a 5 step process for adding information such as website, address, phone number, hours, etc. Part of this process will be to add a profile picture and a cover photo. These are a good idea, but optional.
  10. Once you've finished step 5, click Done.

Once your Page has been created, you can manage it by logging into Facebook.

Add Additional Administrators (School Pages)

For official school Facebook pages:

  1. Open the Page.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Under Audience and visibility, click on Page setup, then click on Page access (or the equivalent menu, as Facebook occasionally changes menu names).
  4. Invite at least one additional employee to help manage the Page.
  5. Assign the appropriate permissions.

Having multiple administrators helps ensure the Page can continue to be managed if staffing changes occur.

Procedure for posting to a Facebook Page

When posting to a Facebook Page, follow these steps:

  1. While in your Facebook Page Professional dashboard, click on "What's on your mind?". This will bring up a dialog box. Type your message, then click Next.
  2. For the Post settings, make sure "Post audience" is set to Public. Then click Post.
  3. IMMEDIATELY after posting, click the "three dots" icon for your post. A popup menu will appear. In the popup menu, click "Who can comment on your post?"
  4. In the "Who can comment on your post" window, click on "Profiles and Pages you mention" as shown below. Then click "Done."

EVERY post on EVERY Page must have comments disabled.

Best Practices

  • Remember for a school page that any important school information should also be posted on the school website.
  • Keep school information current.
  • Share accurate and timely information.
  • Follow all district social media guidelines.
  • Never share confidential student information.
  • Have at least two administrators for every official school Page.

FAQ

A Facebook Page offers several important advantages.

Multiple administrators

A Page can have multiple administrators or editors.

This means:

  • More than one employee can post updates.
  • Another employee can take over if someone changes jobs or leaves the district.
  • No one employee “owns” the school’s social media presence.

For school pages, at least two employees should have administrative access.

Professional appearance

Pages are intended for organizations and provide features such as:

  • Public announcements
  • Events
  • Photos and videos
  • Messaging (optional)
  • Analytics (Facebook Insights)

Compliance with Facebook’s policies

Facebook requires organizations, schools, and businesses to use Pages rather than personal profiles.

A personal account:

  • Represents an individual person.
  • Requires sending friend requests.
  • Should not represent a school or classroom.
  • Can create ownership problems if the employee leaves.

Groups are designed for discussion among members. A Group should not replace the school’s official Facebook presence.

Groups:

  • Focus on conversations
  • Require member management (this is the issue)
  • Are not intended to serve as an official public school page
